A Porcelain Crown Can Be Used to Cosmetically Restore a Tooth’s Function and Appearance

Posted .

If one or more of the teeth in your smile is marred by chips, deep stains, visible dental work or other imperfections, you might want to consult with Drs. Stephen or Christopher Hooper to explore your cosmetic restoration options.

While porcelain dental veneers are a popular option for many people that want a better smile, some teeth might not have sufficient enamel to mount a veneer. In a situation like this, our dentist at Hooper Family Dentistry will often recommend having the enamel layer on one of more teeth restored with a porcelain or porcelain-fused-to-metal crown.

The first step involves Drs. Stephen or Christopher Hooper examining the tooth to assess the overall health of the tooth. This often includes taking a few X-rays to make sure the pulp and root of the tooth are healthy.

Once any issues with the internal structure have been addressed, the dentist will then form an abutment by removing the majority of the enamel layer. This abutment will later serve to anchor your permanent crown in place.

Finally, our dentist will form an impression of the abutment, and the neighboring teeth, as well as your bite pattern. This will be sent to a dental lab, where your new crown is prepared. A temporary crown is placed over the abutment to keep it safe, while you wait for the dental lab to complete your new crown.

Once the dental lab has finished your new crown, we will call you in for a brief follow-up appointment. The temporary crown is removed and your new permanent crown is cemented in place.
