Your mouth can become infected by germs in the environment just like the rest of your body. Beyond the basics of brushing and flossing, there are things you can do to guard against such infections. Here are some examples:
Wash Your Hands: Your hands are one of the most widespread methods of transport for germs. Your hands have direct and indirect contact with your mouth. That’s why you’ll want to wash them often.
Use Mouthwash: After you brush your teeth, rinse your mouth with mouthwash. This will help do away with further bacteria in the mouth.
Clean Dental Devices: If you have a mouth guard, retainer, dentures or another removable dental device, clean it after you use it. The most convenient way to to do this is to rinse it with cool water and brush it with toothpaste.
Keep Your Toilet Lid Closed While Flushing: As you flush, little droplets of water from your toilet can spray up to eight feet around the bathroom and can even land on your toothbrush. The solution is not to hide your toothbrush. After all, your toothbrush needs the open air to dry out after use and to avoid being in the ideal environment where bacteria thrive (warm dark environments). Not to mention your other items in your bathroom don’t need the germs either. Instead, close the toilet lid while you flush.
Replace Your Toothbrush: It’s essential to buy a new toothbrush every three or four months. If you have chronic gum disease, use a new one every four to six weeks.
